History
brackenwhisker has long forgotten most of his kithood, drowning out all the starclan babble and mythological tales that their parents had provided he and his sister briarpaw. he doesn't remember any of the pointless mossball games or mock battles, only the concoction of scents that ruminated in cinderface's comforting den. the young brackenkit loved nothing more than playing with the herbs, enthralled with all of their purposes. it certainly sounded way more intriguing than fighting or worse, dying and going to starclan. the idea of losing your body and going to some distant place among the stars had never been comforting to the young classic tabby.
so when he heard that medicine cats like cinderface completely avoided the battlefield he had been relieved. when briarkit made her way to the medicine cat's den, brackenkit would follow, dreaming of a future on the sidelines, mastering herbs under cinderface. the tabby worked extra hard to master the herbs. his brain would be fried and filled to the brim with knowledge he still struggles to fully recall, but at least he wasn't fighting.
of course his meetings to the medicine cat's den were cut short when they were made apprentices. brackenpaw was given to a burly white tom, blizzardblaze. and briarpaw- he had met his sister with complete shock- was given to cinderface. it made little sense to him, even after hearing about her alleged starclan sign. starclan had been filling his sisters ears, yet he had never heard a word from the ancestors his clan held so closely. surely he deserved the role for all his hard work.
brackenpaw met his new role with no enthusiasm, usually having to be dragged out of camp by his warmongering mentor. he had no interest in fighting or harming life at all. he knew what lay before him in death and feared the same for other cats. yet he always eventually went on with his mentors violent antics, up until it resorted in something that still triggers him til this day. blizzardblaze had hauled he and another apprentice to the rocky shores where he was forced to use his claws against the opposing creekpaw. in the midst of it all, brackenpaw's wide paws sent the spotted tabby careening into a stone, 4 scratches where his many claws had met him. at the sight of blood, brackenpaw quickly shut down, panicking that he had killed the tom.
fortunately, creekpaw was quickly rushed to cinderface where he would continue to live. still, brackenpaw hasn't been able to face the lilac tabby, nor the prospect of war that hung on every lichenclan cat's tongue. after the incident, the classic tabby grew guarded, meeting cats who threatened danger to him or others with a barbed tongue. going along with blizzardblaze had almost gotten a cat killed and brackenpaw was not looking forward to doing that again, even if the cat was from another clan. this carved a huge rift in he and his mentors relationship that brackenpaw cared very little about. but he had to become a warrior somehow. so reluctantly, he took to perfecting his hunting skills. honestly, he lacked the motivation to provide for the clan at all, but knew that he couldn't be an apprentice forever. surely being an apprentice was much more work than being a warrior ever was. hunting proved to be far less dangerous than fighting, and had even became a comfort mechanism for the tom--his nights filled with images of the bloodied creekpaw.
eventually, his prowess earned him the name brackenwhisker, yet the classic tabby soon began to regret his decision to become a warrior. the war is a reality now and brackenwhisker fears that he will be forced to fight. likewise, he fears the safety of his sister after the betrayal of cinderface and only wants the peace to return. still, his fear of losing his life cripples him, and the thought of doing what he did to creekpaw to other cat leaves him paralyzed.
