FINCHSTAR
REDWOODCLAN
light brown tabby and white tom with one green eye and one scarred eye
leader
tom
seventy-nine moons
Appearance
finchstar is a unique one in terms of color, despite how tabby and white colorations are generally not a rare pattern. the whites to his pelt, which smothers half the body, is a tender but ordinary white. his stripes a dark brown, almost black. but the browns that drape over his back and head is what differentiates him from a regular brown tabby. the hues are light, almost pale, and you could almost peg him as a tan tabby with how diluted his browns are. his eyes are as pale as his tabby patches, but a light green instead of a light brown. or should i say, single eye? his other eye now is just a claw mark, but only little of his skin is seen now.
speaking of his eyes, he currently only has one, the other scarred over in thin fur and skin. his body type his quite slender, but his tall legs make up for his lack of muscle. his tail is malformed, barely being as long as half a tail, but not at all comparable to a stump.

Personality
OLD PERSONALITY
Though he is much more suited to be a medicine cat rather than be placed in such high authority, Finchstar has the personality of a harmless kit. Not the type who is fond of strict rules and regulations, he carelessly is subjected to letting cats off the hook for misbehavior, no matter how severe the crime, his compassion a blinding fault that leads him into much criticism. Though he is guided by a warm heart and a calm attitude, it is not the only reason for him to avoid being assertive whenever possible. This big boy is as shy as a bird. He might seem to act as if he purely makes his decisions with compassion and understanding, and that might be true to some extent, but reality hits you pretty hard when dealing with the truth. He hates conflict. He hates confrontation. Wearing a mask of butterflies and rainbows to save himself from facing argument and heat is just part of the daily job for the poor guy. Maybe that's why he is so good at it.
Some do see through his little mask, unfortunately, but only if you pay attention to his actions. For example, the closeness to his deputy and senior warriors. It might be because they are all close friends and get along real well, but not due to idle conversation. Finchstar forced this bond due to his insecure nature. Not in a mean, in-your-face way, but where it gets to the point where there is meeting after meeting after meeting in order to establish simple things such as border patrols, out-of-boundaries trouble, or even "check-ups" where really Finchstar just wants to make sure he still has the confidence of his warriors, and that he isn't screwing anything up. His deputy gets the most of the misfortune, getting subtle, daily, swift remarks about this or that, which usually results in a few comforting words just to calm the leader down.
Finchstar obviously puts on a good show, the other Clans being a great audience to his little act of kindness and the good guy routine. He is well known for his unnerving hospitality, and many think unwise of such behavior, which makes him the center of ridicule. Though not the biggest fan, he is very often the center of attention when it comes to wise advice, and though he feels very uncomfortable about it, he can be very wise with advice or suggestions without knowing it, which is sad, because if he tried and if he had the confidence he would make a much more wiser leader.

this would be a simple topic, but finchstar is not quite the cat he was both as a warrior and as an early leader. finchstar is famous for his genuine nature, his kind-hearted warmth, and faithful loyalty. but he is also famous for his passiveness, anxiousness and indecisiveness. although his positive traits still run true, his negative ones have run a different course.
one of these examples, his passiveness, till tends to rule his decision making. but unlike his mentor, finchstar is willing to harm and even kill. but this is a circumstance that is only allowed if he or his Clan is threatened in a cruel way. this development on this leniency (which still is usually encouraged by his cats rather than himself) has led also to a leniency on the rules, which he had once been a stickler about. anxiousness, though still a prime resident in his constant awareness (that can get so intense he pukes), has also been diluted with regular meditation sessions and plenty of lavender. he also has a hard time thinking through things logically, falling back on his heart too often, but he has matured enough to usually find a balance, despite his heart usually winning.
every decision finchstar makes might not be the right one, but he is much more deliberate now, leading his Clan with not only a more confident momentum, but delivering his leadership with just as much respect and appreciation for his clanmates. used to isolating himself in fear of others, finchstar relishes being a mediator and therapist for his clanmates now, and as his relations with his clanmates grow stronger, he becomes evermore a more brave leader, always trying to balance heart and mind no matter what challenges him.
History
pinenose and stormleaf, were well into their senior moons as warriors before the two even ever fell in love, let alone decide to have a litter. but with them both being dutiful cats and eager to benefit the clan with more bodies, they decided on having kits before their age would cease the chance, this mission barely being a success. a leafbare litter, the clan waited in bated breath for this birth, not just due to the cold, but the mother’s age. out came three kits, but it would only be one skinny tom to survive. finchkit
there was not a lot of room for tenderness and love for finchkit during his strict upbringing. pressure surrounded the young kit. he was not only the survivor, but his parents’ only kit. the two were now too old to produce any more kits, and it would only be in seasons time before they would have to retire entirely. this in turn made finchkit quite an anxious and self–doubting cat, and as he grew into an apprentice, the redwoodclan leader herself would notice the intensity of these behaviors and decide to mentor him herself.
heatherstar was a generous leader, and it would be through this generosity that would inspire her to train finchpaw into the cat she knew he could be. finchpaw, initially, would perform even worse in his anxiety levels, often going into phases of relentless gift giving and apologize for behavior heatherstar never needed an apology for. but she could tell his love for his clan was equal to hers, and the two formed a strong bond. heatherstar would patiently teach him mindful, meditative techniques, aiding in handling his anxiety in the future. she would teach him her keen hunting skills, her strategic dexterity, her merciful tactics. and, she would teach him what it takes to make a great leader, despite having no ambitions for such a role for the nervous cat. heatherstar would become a role-model, a mother figure, a best friend, and the closest and most important cat to finchpaw not in just the moons of his youth, but the current moons of his leadership. in fact, he probably worships her more than starclan themselves.
a kittypet named brownie would join them during his apprentice moons, but she wouldn't catch his eye until he noticed her extraordinary progress compared to clan cats the same age. and as training went on, minkpaw started to become the best apprentice in the den at both hunting and fighting. finchpaw felt sympathy with this behavior, realizing the poor ex kittypet must be trying to prove herself by out beating everyone, but it wouldn't be until their warrior moons that he and her would be friends due to her defensive attitude.
finchpaw would become a warrior during dark times, sagestar having been launching attacks on redwoodclan for claim of the mooncave. this would also be around the same time period of finchtail’s parents’ deaths, an event that would cause an understanding of his parents’ relentless strictness during his youth; he was not just an only child of their litter, but a child in a time of a mortal war.
as tensions continue to rise between lichenclan and redwoodclan, one of their battles had brought the death of the deputy bluetail. gorseheart was chosen as a replacement, and finchtail had felt safer in these paws than in bluetail’s. he had been very intimidated by bluetail since his youth, but gorseheart had always treated him with kindness, especially since heatherstar had such close ties with him. but even as finchtail rose to warriorhood, gorseheart treating finchtail even more like a little brother than a fellow warrior than he did when finchtail was an apprentice. but despite this annoyance, the two got along well.
things would only get worse after the change in deputy, though as moons went on of continuous ambushes and battles. finchtail backed up heatherstar’s decision to encourage or train for a war that she did not believe in, but there would only be more deaths, losing more young and senior warriors.
gorseheart’s death should have been the deciding point to properly fight back, but it would be leafbare’s icy winds that would finally grant redwoodclan a merciful break. but due to the lack of older warriors, a young finchtail would be elected the new deputy, and it would be a moment he would never forget. not just for having gained such a respected position from heatherstar herself, but due to how surprised and nervous he was over the promotion. he would prevail against his anxieties though, allocating food through both strategic use of patrols and his own hunting skills and time to get through the extreme cold weather.
it would be the first battle of new-leaf, the first battle since lichenclan’s retreat in the rising leaf-bare moons, that heatherstar would lose her final life. finchtail had already been very concerned over her, heatherstar mentally weakening since the loss of her mate and deputy. but he wasn’t prepared for her final words before she would throw herself at minnowstar herself in a border skirmish. after a few proud blinks, she would speak words he would never forget, staining his mind forever. ‘don’t forget, there is no such thing as an absolute, timeless enemy.’
it was not easy for finchstar during his early leadership years, especially due to his depressed state over his dead leader. he had chosen minkfur, his best friend, as deputy, but he refused to sleep in heatherstar’s den. it wasn’t until marsh-heart, the medicine cat, had died that he finally took heatherstar’s den as his own. for when he went to comfort the dead medicine cat’s sister, orchidshade, a friendship would blossom from it. and as orchidshade helped personalize finchstar’s new den with lavender, the calming herb would be a stable medication for not just his anxiety attacks, but a subtle addiction of endorphins.
slowly, redwoodclan regained its numbers, despite greenleaf moons being littered with skirmishes with lichenclan. finchstar was sternly stuck in heatherstar’s view of the war, firmly believing that redwoodclan should not be fighting a war for land that should rightfully belong to all of the clans. this results in an attempt at peace negotiations during a clan meeting. but this proves unsuccessful, leading to an official war between the two clans….a war that still lingers.
soon after, during a sudden mudslide while on a border patrol, his deputy dies, who he is forced to replace with Redfox. this choice would turn into an important one, as it provided him with his first mate and kits later on down his path, but also tragedy, as in just a single season they were all swept away in a series of deaths that he still feels the mental scarring from today.
before any of the romance and tragedy, though, when Redfox was just his newly made deputy, a tribe Clan by the name of Hemlock would disrupt one of the Clan's gatherings. Finchstar would help him, permanently connecting him to the tribe from that point forward. this would also cause an immediate attack from Minnowstar that following morning, trying to search and kill the tribe cat, but only warriors were killed that day. but Finchstar would not be there to help, as Hemlock was only safe due to him and Orchidshade traveling to the tribe's island in order to help with their sickness. this would be Finchstar's first regret, Minnowstar's anger the previous night too obvious of a sign that he should have waited and been there for his Clan. But would Hemlock have still been alive?
half-moon would bring worse news. Minnowstar has now declared the moonpool her's, and would disallow any medicine cats to venture there. this would force finchstar to finally make a move an attack lichenclan, but it would only leave him a life less as Minnowstar herself drowns him in the moon pool.
moons later, Icesong would be appointed his new deputy as his unfortunate loss of family would occur during this time. with his new deputy, they focus on the war at hand, training their warriors and strategizing. but it would also be during this time Finchstar would succumb to the deepest depression of his life, and after moons of inactivity in his den would loyal friends such as Loudstorm, Orchidshade, and Tigerpool guide him back into a more positive reality.
after Finchstar recovers, he receives a message from Briarfall that there is a rebellion being plotted in LichenClan, and this would be the first start of tipping the balance in the war.
a moon after the rebel's warning, LichenClan attacks, but RedwoodClan was ready in the trees as they ambushed them from above. and after a fierce battle in the trees between him and Minnowstar, he was finally able to take one of her lives by making the cold decision to let go all of his mercy and throw her off a branch and taking one of her lives. this would finally be a win for RedwoodClan.
after the battle, he would make the decision to take in his first LichenClan refuge after one of his warriors brought in a traumatized cat. this would not be the only cat he brings in from his enemy clan, but it wouldn't be until much later when he feels safe enough to let him help his Clan as equal warriors in fear Minnowstar would discover them and cause more attacks on RedwoodClan.
after their win, Finchstar would take his deputy and go directly to ThistleClan in order to ask for an alliance. but Thievingstar would refuse, causing them to hold back on their aggression. it wouldn't be until leaf-bare that his deputy would finally convince him to make an offensive attack on LichenClan, despite Orchidshade's warnings. this would not only result in her predictions coming true in the most brutal way in the form of RedwoodClan's biggest, most bloodiest loss, but also result in a fall out between him and his medicine cat, which after multiple moons of tension, would finally resolve in a heart felt apology. this would also be the battle that Finchstar would learn Minnowstar was working with rogues.
near the end of new-leaf, Minnowstar sends more warriors and rogues RedwoodClan's way and would ambush their camp on a foggy night, taking one of Finchstar's lives. confidence shaken, Finchstar accompanies his medicine cats to the secret lagoon, where Heatherstar visits him in a dream, convincing the tom he's on the right path. this would also be near the time he would finally give the refugees warrior ranks within his Clan, telling them they would need to fight on their side even if they decided to leave after Minnowstar's fall. they would all agree.
at the following Gathering, Finchstar learns LichenClan attacked ThistleClan's camp and killed Thievingstar. he would also learn from a rebel message that Minnowstar was on her last life. with an opportunity instilled, a moon later he would attempt an alliance again, only speaking to Stagstar this time. Luckily, it prevails, and Finchstar uses this experience to gain respect and authority from the more newer leader. finally, with an alliance in one paw and an advantage in the other, they were ready for war.
and as you know, they won.
many other things have happened in Finchstar's life that have far less impact on the history of RedwoodClan, but far more impact on him personally. for example, his apprentices. Ruefeather had been by far his favorite to train, only still in the earliest seasons of his leadership. but the tom had grown up to be a fine warrior, and the two had only grown closer in his adult life as Finchstar would offer only comfort and kindness to him, even when Ruefeather was lying. Daffodilshimmer and Milkweedleaf had also been fine apprentices, and even better warriors. but the most precious bonds he had picked up along the way of his journey would have to be Sunrise, a cat he could never stop being impressed by, and Pebblefoot, who seemed to get him better than he got himself.
In fact, Pebblefoot and him would end up producing a litter of kits; Acornkit, Violetkit, Thymekit and Parsleykit, and he would finally get the chance to start anew with a healthy, big family. During these times of peace, there still has been a few snags in Finchstar's leadership even now that LichenClan is in good paws. Green-leaf had brought devastating floods to the island, leaving him to share territory and resources with the other Clans since his forest was the only one unaffected. Within his borders, his deputy made a heart-breaking leave, choosing the tunnel cat life over her Clan. Even worse, his dear friend and medicine cat Orchidshade had mysteriously left one day, forcing Asterstorm to pick up her duties and leave him without a valuable comrade. Although Tigerpool and Asterstorm have both made good replacements, he can't help but feel a little tired from the loss.
There has been one good surprise to come out of the recent drama, though, besides his family of course. And that was his new apprentice, coming in the form of an orphan loner after Loudstorm found her alone. He had decided to personally train her, and through their time together, training together, and even burying her mother together, he has found that Blizzardpaw had also felt like his own daughter.
