In stark contrast to the rest of their kin, Raven is pale where the rest are dark—solid where others don stripes and patterns, and a single color where others are composed of many. And it is that single color they possess—a blinding white sure to be noticed even in the night—that draws the attention of so many, not because of its extravagance but rather its simplicity. Beneath it, Raven is sorrily built and uncharacteristically thin for a kit born in times of plenty. The flesh beneath their eyes has a raw, fleshy look, and the eyes themselves are a strangely translucent blue, red about their edges due to a visible interweaving of veins.
Additional [concerning albinism]: Raven was born with a rare condition known as albinism, resulting in a plethora of sensitivities to the outside world. Their skin is prone to burning, and constant exposure to the sun in their early moons has left their pelt in a ratty state, patchy in places from excessive scratching and permanently bare in others. Their eyesight is equally impaired, forcing them to view the world as if through a heavily blurred lens; they cannot make out detailed shapes and are sensitive to bright lights and vibrant colors. Some may note that when looking into Raven’s eyes they are prone to spasming involuntarily to either side. This proclivity results from horizontal nystagmus and contributes to their already poor vision. Even their hearing has been negatively impacted, leaving them unable to hear through one of their ears and particularly ill-suited at regulating noise, especially in loud environments.
Personality
Positive Traits: independent, individualistic, perceptive, and resourceful.
Negative Traits: selfish, obstinate, resentful, and entitled.
A child granted all they could ever ask for, Raven does not want for anything—that is, except to be left alone. Plagued by their condition from birth, Raven has grown deeply resentful of it as well as anyone or anything that might remind them of its existence. They are prone to sinking into ‘tempers’ and ‘dark moods’ when inconvenienced and are so used to having things done for them (often at the drop of a hat) that they do not take kindly to those who do not immediately do as they say.
For all their dislike toward their condition, Raven uses it unashamedly as a crutch to keep themselves from doing things they do not wish to do. They do not enjoy expending energy on things that do not interest them and seem equally unenthused by the prospect of serving a community, even that which exists within their own family. Moreover, they have a difficult time viewing other cats as sentient beings and instead choose to view them as things or tools to obtain that which they desire—a fact that makes them similarly unempathetic to the plights of peers and family.
Despite their apparent inclination toward slothfulness, Raven is far from insipid or dull. They are capable of a great deal, and have a penchant for noticing even the smallest of details others might miss. This talent has allowed them to overcome the impairments of both eyes and ears, and navigate their world with relative—albeit cautious—ease. Due to this, Raven is a cat who moves slowly, not rushing, nor enjoying those who hurry them. In fact, they seem painfully inclined to take as much time as they please regarding any given task.
Raven does not operate on the same schedules as those around them and is beholden to the ones of their invention. They struggle in the face of spontaneity, and though they are capable of adapting, they are slow on the uptake when confronted with change suddenly and against their will. They tend to grow inert in the face of particularly inconvenient occurrences and are known to retire for entire days due to the slightest alteration in their plans.
Some might find such rigidity a sign of dullness or edginess—however, it is important to note that Raven does not particularly care what some might say about them.
History
Season 2024
Born on the cusp of fall, Raven and their brother Blackbird are the descendants of a rare half-blooded pair. Their mother was a she-cat by the name of Song—born of the Tribe and reared in their customs—and their father a cat from across the estuary, reared in war customs and ancient codes. That the two might have ever found one another is in and of itself a coincidence that was surely ordained by the stars.
That they would birth two (relatively) healthy offspring only furthers this sentiment.
Upon the conception of their litter, and with the guidance of their Teller, a vision was procured: two birds of black and white feather flying through a winter storm. It was upon the relaying of this sign that Mist and Song named their kits in remembrance of cats from their pasts. So was the son named Blackbird with Frost-Dappled Feathers after Song’s own mother, and the other named Raven who Flies Through Blizzards after their father’s mentor from the mainland.
