Thievingstar's voice still rang out from her perch, but Mistflower comprehended none of them. Her heart thumped loudly against her chest. The pounding blood thundered in her ears. Fear. Concern. Heart-break. The plethora of emotions that raced through her enveloped her in confusion.
As voices shouted the name of the new deputy, Mistflower rose from her seat and slipped through the crowd. Her pale green eyes were locked on the medicine cat den. That was where Hawktail would be. Its entrance was a gaping black hole. A monstrous mouth that seemed to bestow an ominous warning to the she-cat. Stay away. It seemed to say to her. Heart break resides inside.
Mistflower hesitated only for a moment before sliding through the veil.
The dim den felt cool and silent. Mistflower paused, her eyes adjusting to the dark while her heart continued to pound. Ratwhisker's den had become familiar to Mistflower after her own life-altering injury just some short moons ago. Hawktail, in her gruff way, had comforted the helpless apprentice then. Perhaps, Mistflower hoped, I can help her now.
From the vague shadows of the den a lumpy shape took form. Mistflower approached, quietly, knowing that her mentor lay hurt in that nest. This would be the first time Mistflower spoke with Hawktail since the she-cat had returned from the deadly battle. It felt like a long walk to reach Hawktail's side. As Mistflower neared she took a deep, steadying breath and willed for her heart to ease in its race.
"Hawktail? Can...Can I get you anything?"
Mistflower felt helpless and unsure...and selfish all at once. Am I here because I care for her, or because I need reassurance for my own state of mind? She willed for her intentions to be selfless. It was now her chance to provide the same support Hawktail had given her during their short time as apprentice and mentor
