SHADED
Outsider
large matted calico she-cat with chartreuse eyes
loner
she-cat
43
Appearance
At 13", Shaded is gigantic. Her height might intimidate other cats but that's fine with her. Her body is plump with lean underneath. Matted fur covers her muscles which make her appear less toned than she is. The length of her body is slightly long, but the structure of her legs keep her from looking unnatural. Her lower legs are longer than the section above her elbow, which are instead broader in proportion. Her tail appears short due to her elongated body.
Matted fur covers her entire body. Only her tail and forelegs have smooth fur. These are the areas she can reach and untangle easily. Her wild, unkept fur is calico in colour. Patches of ginger, black and white cover her entire body. Her front paws have little white mittens. Black skin highlight white paw-pads.
Her face displays her array of patterns with a greater emphasis. Her nose to glabella is black, before a splash of ginger lines her forehead in a upside down 'v' shape. Black runs between both her ears, which are black in colour also. A white muzzle contrasts the top half of her multicoloured face. White whiskers line her upper lips. There's sizeable distance between her eyes, and her nose is wide, as is her maw. Green-yellow eyes with slim irises stand out, adding to the intimidation factor.
The default expression on Shaded face lies between pissed off and sad, but sad in a thoughtful way, as if you were thinking of a distant memory you wished dearly to relive.

Personality
+ Cool: hard to upset, sticks and stone kind of gal, but wont stand for disrespect
+ Religious: not in a traditional god sense, but believes in good and evil balances, value of life, the power of reflection and hope
+ Says what she means, doesn't waste words, doesn't say stupid stuff, thinks before she speaks
- Emotionally unavailable, wont open up to anyone and can be harsh when emotions are shared
- Quick to abandon people: if they don't seem worth it, Shaded will just walk away
- Pessimistic: thinks everyone is out to get her
~ Confident: sure of herself and her beliefs
~ Untrusting: Not naïve, hard to trap
~ True to her beliefs, open minded enough to hear someone out but too closed minded to try see it from their point of view. Open refers to 'in the grand scale what does it matter'
~ Lonely: Don't need anyone, but do want someone - often only forms bonds with one person, doesn't like a lot of different friends
History
Pre-birth
A grandfather meets grandaughter 'neath a weary windswept tree by the cliffs. It was bare, as was the barren land. Snow covered the land but not where they lay. She weeps.
0 Moons / March 2020
A grey figure hovers over a mother. He comforts her as a single youth feeds.
2 Moons / May 2020
The scent of her mother is starved to the kitten. Her name, recently given, to be Shaded, as the ground underneath the branches above. Blue eyes peer out a hole beneath a dead tree. Her family approaches. In his mouth an adolescent bird. Grandpaw nudges her deeper into their home to enjoy dinner. Mother is nowhere to be seen again. Grandpaw says she's still looking for herself. Shaded is unsure what that means but knows better than to question him. Grandpaw gets sad when she asks about Mother. Instead, he tells her stories of before. Stories told he was her age. The stories of legendary beast that walked on their rear legs and spoke in low, bellowing tones. As tall as trees. They allowed cats to live like gods. Ugly creatures that would spoil their cats but leave unnatural objects lying everywhere. Cats fell from grace when the earth punished their giants. Dens the size of a forest were destroyed and abandoned when the two-legs returned across the sea, back to the land before life, as Grandpaw said. Ruins still stand as a testimony and eerie waring. All the stories of two-legs reminds her to respect the earth, life and not to act outside a good nature.
12 Moons / March 2021
Shaded and Grandpaw hunt together. He says she's doing well! Especially after such a hard winter. Everyday he trains her harder. Age slows for no one, and time is taking it's toll on his body. Between hunts they talk philosophy. The clans have been restless. Many talks about the feeling of being in a clan, what it does to a cat's being and their religious beliefs. More talk about the recent going war, which the screams can be heard, if you listen when the wind carries their cries. His wisdom instills strong morals on the youth.
13 Moons / April 2021
Together, they feed a lost cat. Shaded is similar in age. They did not talk, only left a morsel within sight of the other and left. Shaded took joy in watching the stranger accept their gift from afar. Grandpa explains kindness at a distance is safer than conversation or bathing in the gratitude of the receiver.
14 Moons / May 2021
Shaded now hunts daily. Grandpa follows her closely. In jokes he says to to fend off her many boyfriends but they both know of the high tensions surrounding them. The island is safe for no cat. Especially not where they are. Rogues chased them from their home, and so, the pair ended up on the border of ThistleClan territory. Although trained, Shaded complains of her inexperience making it hard to catch prey in the open cliffs, and begs her grandfather to allow them to venture into the nearby woods. Her grandfather is reluctant but eventually agrees.
The tom rests in a nearby cranny, his body hidden from the wind and from sight. A young she-cat ventures deeper into the forest. Before her prey could be found, instead, a figure is spotted in the distant woods. If not for the white patch underneath his chin, she would have missed him. Within milliseconds, the pair were racing to the border. A breathless cry came from gasping lips. A warning cry. As they'd rehearsed. Grandpa would know she was in trouble.
Sometime between her reaching the border, to their rendezvous, the brown cat had stopped his chase. There she stood, watching the still woods. Her fur stood on edge. Nothing else mattered except the unyielding forest ahead.
Then, he emerged. He was being dragged. A limp body now. As Grandpaw would describe, his shell. His shell was bloodied. As was his murder's maw. Their blue eyes met as the body was dragged closer and closer. Each shuffled pull of the killer caused her fur to grow and her heart to bounce further up and up into her throat until she couldn't hold it. Vomit fired from her muzzle - mouth and nose. Legs shook. A hot forehead felt light. Her eyes could not shift away from the icy glare or the remains.
A grunt, then a thud as a sticky red mouth opened, and the grey body fell. Then, he simply turned, and left.
Shaded mourned beside her one and only friend until the smell could not be tolerated.
20 Moons / December 2021
A young cat around 16 moons befriends a grief-stricken, anxiety-ridden Shaded. He is kind. An emotion Shaded reacts to his hospitality with coldness. The unexpected warmth is welcomed although confuses her. The pair bond, and he actively helps her recover, although they never grow less than a meter's distance apart. One day, he tells her she's no longer to meet with him as his family don't like her ideals. This devastates Shaded and in her sorrow she curses him. He grows fearful of her outburst and runs away, leaving a heartbroken Shaded to regret her actions alone.
24 Moons / March 2022
Rumours around the small number of cats she would talk to at a distance inform her with warning of a Poppy. A cat similar in age to herself but with the influence of rogues. Shaded avoids the ever-growing gang when possible but the northern cliffs are only so big.
While asleep in a bush, a nearby conversation is heard, one which chills her to the core.
A couple discuss the upcoming attack on LichenClan. The tactics. Attack without warning. Kill with haste. Further reason to stay away from the gangs.
36 Moons / March 2023
Old acquaintances seemed to be lost with the blizzard. A few remained but they didn't talk at all. The harsh weather made eating difficult. Scraps were often and killing over prey was not unheard of. Shaded survived through determination and remembrance of her teachings. Mediations helped her sleep through hunger-pains. During this stage she began to socialise more with other loners. She'd enquire from afar if they were okay. This was purely out of care.
This began to become more common until she met a tom. He was kind. He used the horrid weather to develop trust, even leaving small prey items nearby her, but never pushed her to approach him. They began to bond. One day he asked him to meet his friends. When Shaded refused, he grew bitter, and accused her of using him. The she-cat fled the tense situation, and promised herself not to be so foolish as to allow another cat think her a friend. It seemed this lifestyle was not intended for her to have friends.
42 Moons / August 2023
The flood has devastated Shaded. She was unable to swim well, and so, could not hunt fish. Land was a rare resource, and food rarer. Her desperation led to befriending cats with the intent to steal their food. After she ate, her morals would kick in, and cause her to curse herself. Yet, the thrill of stealing with success tainted her, and she somewhat enjoyed it.
