Yarrowstar
lichenclan
scarred, lanky, long-haired blue point tom with blue eyes
Leader
Male
Eighty-five Moons
Appearance
Yarrowstar's body was built for the sea caves he grew up in. He has a thin, lithe frame, and a long, angular face, both advantageous for trekking through narrow tunnels. This paired with his long limbs makes travel easy for the tom. It's clear that Yarrowstar has spent seasons in war with great amount of muscle lining his body, especially around his legs.
If you couldn't tell his prowess from his physique, it's made obvious by the gnarly scars that trace his body. Yarrowstar has but a nub for his left ear and what's left of his eye on the same side is concealed by several gashes. Another sits horizontally on his right flank as well as a mostly concealed shoulder gash. The most prominent of his injuries however is a scar crossing his throat that has yet to heal.
Where there aren't scars, Yarrowstar boasts a medium-length, feathery, white coat, tinged tan from years spent in the wild. His face, ears, paws, and tail are all slate gray in color and he has sky blue eyes.

Personality
Astute: Despite his lack of an eye and an ear, Yarrowstar is immensely perceptive. Moons as a warrior and then deputy has enabled the tom to asses situations efficiently. With his recent disability, Yarrowstar is forced to be as cautious as ever. The feline makes habit of watching carefully, and then dwelling deeply on his actions.
Resolute: Even without an alliance, Yarrowstar is still as purposeful, determined, and unwavering as a clan cat. He acts for the great or good and adamantly sticks to his beliefs. Yarrowstar feels passionate about doing right and with his past as dark as it is, will die before doing harm to someone again.
Cautious: Yarrowstar has caused harm in him past. He has caused pain and suffering and even death. Regretting his actions immensely, Yarrowstar goes out of his way to avoid potential problems or dangers. He's always thinking about how his actions could affect another cat and careful to be the opposite of what he was in the past.
Devout: StarClan is immensely important to the tom. Yarrowstar feels he wouldn't be alive without StarClan and thus reveres them even more fervently than his time in LichenClan. Yarrowstar prays to them often, and still finds it necessary to confess his sins despite his lack of a mooncave. To him, it is necessary that he act in StarClan's image.
Cold: Yarrowstar is stoic and reserved, seeming to lack much feeling or warmth. He struggles to display his emotions and speaks in a monotone, composed manner. Sticking to himself has always been easy, so he does that unless he feels like he needs to lead in a certain situation. When forced to talk about things that don't involve duty, Yarrowstar can often appear awkward.
Selfless: Yarrowstar has recently found himself going above and belong for others. He can't bear the thought of being the cat he was in the past and thus helps out in any way he can. His want to help can become extreme at times, not hesitating to put the health of other cats above the health of himself. Yarrowstar can't help but think he needs to sacrifice himself to redeem himself.
History
0-6 moons
Yarrow, once named Hemlock-kit, was born to a young pacifistic LichenClan couple along with his sister Hollykit. Cloverstripe and Vervaincloud were eager to foster two warm-hearted kits who would hopefully come to understand that StarClan wanted peace. Especially with the tumultuous Sagestar as leader. To them, it was essential they get their kits to resent Sagestar’s frequent violence.
---
Hemlock-kit is baptized along with his sister and the determined kit is happy to be that much closer with StarClan now.
---
Cloverstripe is seen as odd for encouraging her kits to talk and get to know as many clanmates as possible. Hemlock-kit’s first memories were of how happy he felt getting to know each and every cat in his clan and vows to build connections with as many cats as possible.
---
It goes without saying that it was horrifying for the kit to see the cats he had just met all battered and bloodied from war. Hemlock-kit’s parents explain that the war is the reason why they prefer pacifism. While Hollykit takes their words to heart, Hemlock-kit instead feels an urge in him to protect, not hide away in fear.
---
Much to his parents' dismay, Hemlock-kit develops a liking towards fighting. While Cloverstripe is able to get Hemlock-kit to stop attacking his sister, she can’t get him to put the idea of violence to rest. Hemlock-kit spends the rest of his kit-hood begging anyone willing to teach him battle moves.
6 - 12 Moons
The newly named Hemlockpaw is disappointed when his prayers for a proud, strong mentor aren’t answered. He’s apprenticed to Basscloud, a friend of his parents who shares their pacifist ways. Hemlockpaw can’t help but resent the molly and after a moon or so of sitting through her useless training, begins to train himself.
---
His skills increase upon befriending a tom named Flashpaw and training with the tabby’s mentor. Hemlockpaw welcomes the assistance of several of the strongest LichenClan warriors and begins to become the talented fighter he had always dreamed of becoming. He could protect his clan.
---
Hemlockpaw is truly allowed to test his skills along the RedwoodClan border. Hemlockpaw truly shines on the battlefield when he saves an injured clanmate from the claws of RedwoodClan. Hemlockpaw is named warrior soon after.
12 - 22 Moons
Hemlockpaw is named Hemlockheart for courage and strong LichenClan ideals. After confessing at the mooncave and sitting vigil, Hemlockheart is delighted to finally be a warrior who can protect his clan whenever needed.
---
Hemlockheart becomes an active participant in the war as LichenClan make strides to take the mooncave. Hemlockheart is eager to fight under Sagestar and take what StarClan very obviously laid out for their clan and their clan only. Hemlockheart further drifts away from his family who wants absolutely nothing to do with all the violence. The tom strives to keep them out of it, vowing to protect them at all costs.
---
Hemlockheart is eventually given his first apprentice. Flintpaw is nothing like the rowdy, battle hungry apprentice he was. Yet, the new mentor appreciates his drive towards StarClan.
22 - 28 Moons
A border patrol with his sister Hollyfeather ends horribly. With leaf-bare tensions high, it only takes a few moments for harsh words to turn to harsh blows. Hemlockheart doesn’t hesitate in displaying his battle prowess, yet his sister struggles to avoid the hateful claws of RedwoodClan. Hemlockheart is just barely able to save his sister whose injuries are much much worse than his. With mostly Hollyfeather’s blood staining the snow, LichenClan flees. Hemlockheart can't help but wonder if his sister could have been more prepared for this.
---
Hemlockheart has a shift in attitude during the 2 moons he spends with his sister in the Medicine Cat Den. He can’t help but blame his mentors and cats like him who shelter their apprentices from the harsh life of warriorhood. Instead of telling himself he is weak, Hemlockheart begins to see his clan as weak.
---
Hollyfeather dies from infection that leaf-bare and Hemlockheart is distraught. In his grief, Hemlockheart hears StarClan. Hollyfeather had to die for him to make LichenClan stronger.
---
Hemlockheart intensifies Flintpaw’s training. The pair spend their last few moons honing their fighting and Hemlockheart uses LichenClan’s frequent spars with RedwoodClan to his advantage. Flintpaw is named Flintheart for his devotion to StarClan.
28 - 42 Moons
Hemlockheart is shocked when the newly named Minnowstar appoints him deputy, but as he ponders his prowess and devotion to StarClan, it begins to make sense to him. Convinced it’s StarClan’s will, Hemlockheart wastes no time using his power to increase LichenClan’s training. With Minnowstar’s approval, Hemlockheart begins to shape LichenClan in his image.
---
Hemlockheart spends the peaceful leafbare getting used to his role. With their focus away from the mooncave, he puts more focus into training. It's around this time that Hemlockheart truly begins to focus on the training of apprentices and often finds himself pulling away apprentices from their mentors to train them himself.
42 - 48 Moons
Hemlockheart is given his second apprentice and the tom shows little mercy on the head-strong Quickpaw. The bengal’s training is intense and constant. Hemlockheart isn’t beyond exposing the tom to risks if it means he’ll grow stronger in the future. Quickpaw’s exponential growth in prowess confirms that his methods are indeed effective.
---
When leaf-bare ceases, Hemlockheart helps Minnowstar make further claim on the mooncave. The two plan to use Finchstar’s meek nature to their advantage.
---
Hemlockheart participates in a bloody skirmish that sparks conflict between LichenClan and RedwoodClan after a season of no conflict. Minnowstar denys Finchstar’s offer for peace and war is established between the two feuding clans.
---
A tribe cat interrupts a gathering, pleading for help. After RedwoodClan offers assistance, Minnowstar orders Hemlockheart to lead an ambush the following dawn to kill the strange cat. While LichenClan is easily able to take on RedwoodClan, they aren’t able to find the mysterious tribe cat and flee. - Tigerpool scars his right flank. Redfox scars his right shoulder.
48 - 60 Moons
Quickpaw is named Quickstrike for his skill in fighting. Hemlockheart takes on Leopardpaw’s training after his mentor dies. The tom uses the same merciless training he used on Quickstrike and is relieved that Leopard takes well to all of it. Although a little weirded out by some of his tendencies, Hemlockheart is sure he is creating another powerful LichenClan warrior.
---
Still at war with RedwoodClan, Hemlockheart does his best to keep his clan as powerful as possible.
---
LichenClan is victorious after Finchstar leads an attack on the mooncave. After their win, Leopardpaw is named Leopardface.
---
Tangled in her own paranoias, Minnowstar decided against going to the gathering. Hemlockheart goes against her and leads the clan to the mooncave himself. Enraged, Minnowstar makes Hemlockheart confess and the tom does so begrudgingly. Hemlockheart wonders if Minnowstar is as aligned with StarClan as he once thought after she requests she sire her litter. Hemlockheart quickly denies her request and retreats.
---
Hemlockheart is enraged when talk of rebellion hits his hears and helps Minnowstar interrogate Lavendermist and Creekshade.
60 - 69 Moons
"Hemlockheart discovers Nightclaw near the Redwoodclan and Thistleclan border and accuses him of treachery. Enraged, the deputy challenges him and a fight ensues. Nightclaw is chased into rogue territory, but not without receiving horrible wounds. Equally injured, Hemlockheart's scent is last detected near the Redwoodclan border, and he is never found again."
---
Bloodied and half dead, Hemlockheart sees what he believes is StarClan. Except, this StarClan isn’t the one he’s grown used to feeling at the MoonCave. No, this StarClan is much brighter and warmer. Hemlockheart determines that the StarClan he’s been following--Minnowstar’s StarClan--is just an illusion he made up. They don’t want violence, they don’t want the other clans to wallow in their sins, LichenClan isn’t better. They are the ancestors of all.
---
A mysterious molly named Aster finds the nearly dead Hemlockheart and brings him back to health. When asked his name, the tom grows ashamed of the name he wore while following after the wrong StarClan. He calls himself Yarrow, hoping he too can purge himself of sin like how the herb helps to purge those of poison.
---
Yarrow wanders the abandoned lands in solemn solitude. He can’t stop thinking of the blood he shed, all the violence he’s caused, and does what he can to make up for it by helping whatever troubled soul he came across. But it was never enough to soothe his own troubles.
---
With the arrival of Leaf-bare, Yarrow heads to The Northern Cliffs in search of warmth and shelter. He's reluctant to utilize the tunnel, but would rather count on it's depths than freeze above ground. Instead, the tom finds a pack of rogues occupying the treacherous shores.
Yarrow finds comradery in a tom called Hawthorne, and after teaching the massive tabby how to properly utilize the shores, is invited a place among the ragtag group. The former deputy is apprehensive at first, but realizes that StarClan is actually blessing him. By taking Hawthorne up on his offer, the tom is able to help many cats. Yarrow knows of the rogues feud with ThistleClan, and prays that by keeping them fed, he could keep them away from clan territory.
Yarrow later meets with the rogue leader herself. Recognizing Lily as the the molly who stole kits from ThistleClan all those seasons ago, the former LichenClanner feels even more committed to making sure the rogues stay on The Northern Shores.
69 - 77 Moons
Towards the end of that season, Lily announces something that the former deputy simply refuses to believe. And Yarrow is in denial of that announcement until it's standing directly in front of him a half-moon later. The LichenClan leader--Minnowstar--would shelter the rogues beneath her territory in exchange for?? They didn't know what, but Yarrow could guess. His former leader needed soldiers, but the tom still struggled to believe that the devout Minnowstar was using rogues to do her bidding. Never, in a million seasons would he have expected to see such a thing. Fearful of the LichenClan leader's ire, Yarrow follows Minnowstar and the rogues into the tunnel, but flees down a separate pathway at the last moment.
---
Yarrow gets lost in the tunnels for an amount of time that even he isn't aware of. Exhausted and starving, the desperate rogue has no choice but to trust in StarClan, and have faith that they were guiding his path. Indeed they were. Yarrow is sure that it was the stars that guided him to Brook and Adder, two former clan cats who had turned the mysterious depths into a home. And most importantly, they belonged to a group who had also been wronged by LichenClan. After earning the trust of Adder, Brook, and their leader Vega as well, Yarrow begins working in the shadows to help the clan cats from beneath.
77 - 80 Moons
At the end of Green-leaf, Quickstrike reveals himself to the tunnel cats as the leader of the rebellion and Yarrow is both shocked and proud. It was a relief to see that his training hadn't at all destroyed his former apprentice's will. And after an apology, Yarrow meets with the bengal to discuss LichenClan's future. Together, they agree to make sure Minnowstar can never harm their loved ones again.
---
The days seem to pass by slowly in wait for the final battle, but after a moon, they attack. Not just the tunnel cats. And not just LichenClan rebels and exiles. The entire island comes together to strike down Minnowstar and her toxic regime, but the battle is anything but swift and Yarrow learns that many LichenClan lives were lost the next day.
---
As RedwoodClan and ThislteClan overwhelm LichenClan from the inside, Yarrow leads Nightclaw straight through The Mooncave in search of Minnowstar. They are lucky to encounter Emberscorch, who falters upon recognizing him as the former deputy. Together, they discover the fleeing Minnowstar and Yarrow rushes after her alone.
---
With StarClan's guidance, Yarrow helps Quickstrike corner Minnowstar beneath LichenClan territory. With their efforts combined, Quickstrike is able to end The Heron-line in one motion. Minnowstar perishes between the bengal's fangs, but before they can dispose of the former leader's body, StarClan appears before the two toms. A bright molly with a pelt spotted with stars reveals herself as Egretfeather. Yet despite the starry molly being Quickstrike's kin, she names him as leader instead. Immediately, Yarrow refuses, fearful of power getting to his head once more. But with the encouragement of his new deputy, and knowing that he doesn't have to do this alone, Yarrow accepts his place as LichenClan's leader. Perhaps this is the way to right his many, many wrongs.
