StarClan. What a few moons it had been. In the time it had taken for the season to come nearly full circle, Redfox's entire life had changed and flipped upside down. For the best, for the worst, and everything in between. It seemed like her life was everything she had always dreamed- but completely wrong at the same time. It was an odd feeling, living a life she envisioned but in an off-colored kind of way. It was time to fix it. Now that her kits were older, it was reasonable. They were more out of her fur and in some other cats'. It was a perfect time to start building a relationship with them now that they were of an age where they could relate. All the mother could do is hope they would want to do the same.
Broken relationships. They were familiar to her now. Finchstar. He had never fully recovered after that call-to-arms meeting with the clan. Though they were sleeping next to each other again, it lacked the warmth and affection that caused her to fall in love with the tom that fateful evening of the invasion in the camp. It hurt her heart. He stood before her, mangled both physically and emotionally.
It was time to fix things. With everyone.
It had taken some time the night prior. It was no easy feat to track down four newly named apprentices with all of the tasks assigned to them. Her trusty apprentice Coalpaw had come in handy with this, asking Flamingpaw and Flickerpaw to come find Redfox before they retired to their nests. She had tracked down Flarepaw and Cinderpaw herself. Flarepaw at the fresh kill pile, Cinderpaw in the elder's den. It had taken some convincing, some begging, and some gentle briing but eventually, all four kits had agreed to meet at the wake of the sun.
Finchstar had been much easier. Though quiet, Redfox knew he couldn't turn down the opportunity to see all four kits in one place. Perhaps he would have preferred it without her red fur... She was almost certain.
StarClan it hurt. She missed Finchstar.
All of this was in the past. The family now walked as the sun started to peek through the trees, almost as if to spy on the inwardly imploding family. A sneaky eye, an extension of StarClan's disappointment. The air was cool and crisp, a sign of the impending snow to come. Her fur tingled, a slight buzz on her fur to promise a storm brewing and heading their way in the future. But for now, the sky was clear and the birds chirped in the distance. Not as active as during the warm days, eluding to Redfox's rumbling tummy.
The four kits were walking in a group in front of the mates, about four tail lengths ahead. Flamingpaw led the point, babbling and bossing the rest of the litter about. Complaining and grumbling. As Flamingpaw always seemed to be doing. The group talked amongst themselves, leaving out their parents.
But it was okay. It was progress.
The tension between Finchstar and Redfox was nearly physical painful. Leaves crushed beneath their paws as the silence grew louder between them. Slowly, the deputy breathed out to reveal a small little cloud of breath. Anxiety churned in her stomach. "I've missed you, Finchstar." She breathed out quietly, just audible to the tom. Her tall, lanky love.
