Spring has finally sprung! Better late than never along the 'ole, miss chilly Lake Superior! The islands are finally green and teeming with fresh, flourishing life. Trees are budding and blossoming. Lounging in a stray sunbeam is finally socially acceptable again...yet a cold, dark presence is lingering in the tunnels, remnescent of leaf-bare's cruel clutches...dun dun dun. We have a lighter Announcement month this may! We're continuing our spring cleaning event and announcing a few site updates and patrols, so please check 'em out!
The Apostles is a warrior cats roleplay based in northern Wisconsin. On Lake Superior, the wild cats have made the Apostle Islands their home. It is on these islands - Rocky Island and South Twin Island - that the clan and tribe cats have lived in a peace and harmony that ebbs and flows with the tide.
But as the tides turn, so does the truce that binds them to one another; and as the water raises, a darkness follows, an evil that will end in bloodshed and violence.

Whitewhisker couldn't remember how long she had been trapped. It couldn't have been too long - she was not hungry, nor did she feel tired enough to sleep. She paced and paced, blue eyes staring at the open hole above her almost expectantly. It hung like a moon in the darkness of the tunnels, the only source of light by which she could see. Not hungry or thirsty or yearning for the safety of her nest quite yet, Whitewhisker did not yet feel desperate enough to wander the tunnels in search of a better exit. Eventually, she assumed, something would change, and the hole she had fallen through would somehow become accessible despite the several foxlengths between herself and the surface. Something would change, and she'd be let out of the frightening dark, out into the open world beyond.
Something did change, but it was not a climbable tree sprouting beneath her paws, nor a great bird flying down, grabbing her by the scruff, and heaving her back into the storm. It was another thing, falling and falling, landing harshly against the ground. Whitewhisker, startled from her pacing by the flash of white, approached, her nose lowered to sniff at the furry beast.
It was a rabbit, stunned or dead from the fall. Instinct flared, and Whitewhisker leaned down, nipping the back of its neck to ensure it was dead. Only then, did a question form in her mind. Had the creature gotten lost above, and fallen in by accident? Or had it been chased?
Before Whitewhisker could get out of the way, she felt a body slam into her back. A yowl erupted from her mouth as she flailed beneath the other's weight, a bright pain erupting on her spine as she felt claws prickle at her skin. With a few scrambling pawsteps and a big roll, Whitewhisker spiraled away from the beast that had fallen on her, eyes wide and lips parted as she panted for breath.
She blinked. Oh. It's a cat! A smile slowly crept across her face as she perked up, ears unfolding from her crown and tail raising high to wave at her friend. It's Blizzardbite! Hi Blizzardbite! Her eyes blinked as she watched the pointed feline rise to her feet, back arching, fur poofing out as the sudden realization of where she was beginning to settle within. Whitewhisker ducked her head low, and moved forward, her nostrils flaring as she sniffed at Blizzardbite curiously. "Safe me?" She murmured, glancing up to the skylight and then at her friend. Maybe, Blizzardbite had come all the way down here to rescue her, and all would be well in a matter of moments. The chased hare was all but forgotten in the excitement of no longer being alone.

Lilacmist steeled herself as she approached the lagoon, traveling leisurely through the tunnels to reach it. She knew she was not to be the first to arrive - she had dawdled too much for that. It was just as well. Her arrival without her mentor would be one inspected thoroughly by the others, and if she had simply been there before the others arrived, they might have been slower with their questions.
Better to answer them all at once, Lilacmist had decided, Than let them pepper me with them all night.
She took a deep breath and stepped out into the cavern that surrounded the lagoon, into the view of the others. Immediately, she tried to surprise the tingle that ran down her spine, the nervousness that suddenly seemed to be drowning her. She blinked with rounded eyes, took another breath, and tried to muster a stronger expression as she approached, one that did not betray the fear that she felt in her solitude.
She did not wait for them to ask any questions. "Briarfall is gone. She disappeared a night ago, and I don't know where she is..." They had no real reason to think she knew more, and she did not dare utter a complete falsehood in a place of StarClan's truths. "LichenClan is going to look for her, but in the meantime..." She looked at each of them. "Yarrowstar has taken it upon himself to name me a full medicine cat and has given me the name Lilacmist." She dipped her head to them. That was a lie, but at least it was one they had no way of proving. They would not understand... no one knows Coyotecall as I do, and none of them ever will. She guarded him jealously, even the knowledge of her time spent before him a mystery to all but herself and StarClan.
"Did you find any signs of where Orchidshade went? Maybe she and Briarfall found each other after all..." She was oddly hopeful at that - the thought that Coyotecall had exaggerated and that Orchidshade was somewhere safe with her mentor was a comforting one. She tried not to think about it as though it were an impossible daydream.

Cedarkit had never been a skilled hunter. Occasionally, she had found a stray lizard in the tunnels to crunch between her teeth, but the cat had never realized just how much she had relied on Oleander to hunt for her until she was all alone and helpless. Often, in those starving moons after her blood father's death, she cursed his name for not teaching her how to hunt for herself. She chased after mice and frogs and even crickets and most nights went to sleep with a cold hunger in her belly.
Now, of course, she had a clan to hunt for her. Not for long... Not even her uncle's kindness was eternal - if she could not hunt for herself, she would not be permitted a place within the clan of her birth. If she could not hunt for others, then she would never find her place in this land, and she would bear the name of a kitten forever. Throughout her life, she had clung to the bits of her heritage that she could. Now, it weighed over her - a constant reminder of her otherness.
If I want a new name, I gotta earn it! She leaped from the bushes, startling the pigeon and sending it skyward. "SHIT!" Cedarkit shouted, leaping after it, careening into the air. Her forelegs stretched out, and she grabbed ahold of the bird by a wing. It let out a cry as she brought it to the ground, stumbling her clumsy broad paws over it, pinning it to the ground, and then crushing its skull in her jaws. Her breath came in hot bursts from her lungs as she pulled a whisker away, looking down at her mangled catch. It's good enough for me, so it's gotta be good enough for an elder or two. She breathed a long, low sigh.
Her ears turned as she heard movement not far away. A growl erupted from her throat, and she lunged into a protective stance, her body perched over her prey. "This is mine!" She announced into the wind, the instinct to defend her catch bristling the fur of her nape.

Lostgaze stared at the sandy creek, mouth twisted into a frown. It no longer moved as a brown foaming torrent across the landscape. Its volume had diminished to the level it had been before the flood, though the muddy walls that descended to its bank were sheerer than before and more precarious. He looked down at water as it stumbled over stones and shimmering pebbles, his eye lidded in contemplation.
His ear twitched, the sound of a footstep sounding behind him. He glanced back over his shoulder to see a familiar face lurking amidst the RedwoodClan ferns. "Hey," He greeted with a slow blink of his single working eye. With a sniff, he turned back to stare at the water.
He did not know Kitestorm well if he was being honest. She was not much younger than him, but she was definitely not a cat he spent much time with. I hardly spend time with anyone. Few made it their mission to get to know him, and he didn't think he minded most of the time. He had Pinesmoke, and that was enough. He had never sought Kitestorm out, and she had never sought him out, and that was that.
To see her casually watching him was odd, but Lostgaze was used to the occasional staring clanmate. "I got a question for ya." He mewed, pursing his lips. "You can tell me ya don't wanna answer, or to piss off or whatever, and I'll respect it. But I... well, I don't really got anyone else to ask." There were plenty of cats that he could go to, he was sure, but he doubted he would have better luck with them than with Kitestorm. And she was awfully convenient, finding him when he felt particularly pensive.
"Did your ma ever do anything for your dad? Like, did she ever make a lil' memorial or somethin'?" He looked back to her over his shoulder again, trying to gauge her expression. "It's been so long since I've seen Silverpaw, and, well, I just don't think he's comin' back. And I feel like I should do somethin', like make a memorial for ‘im. Since I can't bury ‘im." He shrugged.

Dewcloud knew that the goodbye he would have to say next would be the hardest one. He watched Ravenfeather from across the clearing, observing the tom as he spoke to Waspsong. He was smiling, but only with the very corner of his mouth, a restrained sort of smile that had become the extent of the dark-furred tom's happy moments. It was rare that Ravenfeather seemed to find a moment of peace. It hurt Dewcloud deeply that he would once again be a source of pain for his mentor.
Only when Waspsong had left to attend to her hunting patrol did Dewcloud begin to slowly approach. A sizable feline, Dewcloud could hardly move stealthily in the open clearing that was RedwoodClan's camp. And yet, there was a way that he slunk that gave the impression that he was trying to approach a bear from behind - never to be noticed.
It did not take long before Ravenfeather spotted him, and turned to look upon him with fond yellow eyes. Dewcloud stood straight and swallowed the lump that had been building in his throat. I have to do this. He deserves to know before the others do. It had yet to come out, Dewcloud's intentions to leave the clan. He did not want to worry anyone, even as the days of his presence within the camp he had been raised in ticked by.
"G-good morning," Dewcloud chirped, looking more nervous than normal as he drew near to Ravenfeather. His tail flicked back and forth, and he could not quite smooth the rising of his hackles, puffing out his already long fur. "D-did you have any, um, any luck? Hn-hunting?" He had been watching Ravenfeather for some time and had seen the tom bring back a fat rabbit from the forest. "It's, uh, warm now, mhm? A-a warm greenleaf..."
Talking about the weather was hardly what Dewcloud needed to say, but the words came out in feeble deflections from his intentions. I have to tell him. But it can wait a few more moments, right?

Of all the things that could keep a cat awake at night, Forestflight had never anticipated that the things preventing dreams from pushing her consciousness away to be the darkness and the silence. She had always grumbled at the snores of her clanmates in the warrior's den, and then, at the dawn light that peered in when morning drew too near. It was only when the sun and stars were nowhere to be found, and the silence of the tunnels was all-encompassing in its eternal void did she realize that, just as much as the sounds and sights of RedwoodClan awoke her, they put her to sleep in equal measure.
It was a fact that had haunted her since she had gone beneath the earth. Something about it left her constantly on edge, as though any subtle movement might bring down the rocky ceiling above. She could only hope that Icesong was getting what she came here for - even if the stars that had called to the frosty queen seemed especially far away from under the ground.
A jostling at her side drew her attention away from the impossible blackness of the cavern and towards the queen pressed against her side. She raised her head, eyes blinking as though she might be able to make out Icesong's features in the dark. Her brow furrowed, a mumbling voice murmuring from Icesong's parted jaws.
Tentatively, Forestflight leaned down, drawing her tongue against Icesong's forehead in an attempt at comfort. The tortie had never been especially good at such gestures, but she did her best. I wonder what she's dreaming about... It seemed that Forestflight would have plenty of time to ask, as Icesong awoke suddenly, a gasp echoing into the silence.
"Good morning, sunshine," Forestflight purred with a grin. She waited a few minutes, eyes looking towards Icesong, but not seeing her in the complete darkness. "Just kidding! It's probably just passed midnight." She moved forward, relying on her whiskers to find Icesong's face. She pressed her nose to Icesong's - it felt hot.
"Hey, there, are you okay?" She blinked, pulling away and settling into the moss a bit, her tail curling around Icesong to pull her closer. "Bad dream?"

Flashfang was used to taking his apprentices out for a day's hard labor. He had lived many moons as a senior warrior, let alone a warrior at all, and had all but perfected the art of mentorship. At least, the older tabby certainly thought so when he tapped his nose to Vervainpaw's at his ceremony.
And yet, there was something about the young cat that seemed to signify that there was something different about this kitten. Flashfang's prior apprentices had all been eager toms and she-cats, excited for the opportunity to face the world. And yet, for the first time, Flashfang feared that he had received a coward as his apprentice. Well, he will certainly grow out of it then, The tom decided as he met Yarrowstar's eyes, a knowing look shared between old war companions. He had to give the little guy to me; any other warrior would've torn him apart!
So with the slight blue-tabby, not many pawsteps behind, the pair set out into LichenClan territory with the need to explore it for the first or the manyst time.
"Alright, Vervainpaw," Flashfang began with a big, warming chuff, his fur fluffing against the chill of the dawn air. "This is our first border - the one that we share with the water." A pale-tipped paw reached up and gestured to the long line of the coast, where the sand and stone met the surf of wave after wave with not even a grumble of complaint. "Your father's surely taken you to see beyond LichenClan's camp, but even then, you'd only be able to see a minuscule fraction of all our shoreline."
He began his broad saunter down the coast, a mere few whiskers between where the edge of the water raced with each incoming heartbeat of the lake. Not once did he glance back, certain that the young apprentice would be trotting at his heels no matter how much broader each of Flashfang's steps. "You'll travel like this, along the shore, when you hunt for waterfowl and voles and sometimes fish, but not much on border patrols. The danger of fish-cats is practically zero." The tom laughed. "They prefer to stay in the depths - far, far from us on the island."

Poppy smiled at his jokes, almost letting a girlish chuckle rise from her chest. She let him turn himself over, observing keenly from where she stood, taking the chance to watch the pales of his pelt shift in the dim light and reveal the tender musculature beneath.
She shrugged at his question. "Not much of a flood all the way up here," She gestured back towards the high ground that stretched behind her. The hillside was long and drawn out, a slow, gentle incline that led into billowy balsam forests. Beyond the far-spaced trees, the fronts of underbrush, her lodge lay tucked, a haven against any storm.
"If I were having problems with the flood, I can assure you, the whole island would be underwater." She laughed a bit at that. "No, it seems that the low-lands are what suffered, even more than last time. It's such a sad thing too, the nearer I get to ThistleClan territory, the better the hunting." She blinked at him, lashes batting. "The more handsome the tom's too."
She took a step nearer, leaning down, sniffing at his furs as though trying to detect the faint odor of blood or to spot the sign of a wound. Her breath stirred at his whiskers, warm against the chill of the wind. "You sure you aren't hurt too badly? I know a place where we can get out of the wind, I'm sure you must be freezing!" She placed a paw on him, feeling how cold he was. Not much worse than me. With her coat soaked with rain, Poppy felt a shiver race up her spine as a gust of wind brought the cold of spring against her pelt.
