Hello Apostles!
If there's one thing that I've been known for this past year at the Apostles, it's most likely the amount of typing that I do around here. These ever-present and omniscient fingers invoke the phrase in every discord channel at most any time of day.
Kaz is typing...
What am I typing though? Beats me. I am quite slow when it comes to organizing my thoughts. The magic of technology serves as a great aid, but it also leaves me with a slew of interfacing devices to learn. From controllers of all shapes and sizes, to MIDI devices, kinetic interfaces and even BCI/EEG neural, there all sorts of ways I like to interact with computers. The most clunky one for me however has been the basic, 101-button standard keyboard. Sometimes, I'll even take so long to type out what's in my head that it leaves, leaving me with books full of incomplete text fields all over the internet.
Not anymore.
My new year resolution is to become a better typist, so to that end, I thought I'd keep my practice log/ diary of the experience of learning how to touch type here for all to read. You can expect daily updates for at least the next three months, probably around 3:30pm PST, and all kinds of analytics while I tweak my strategy and hone my skills.
Any typing challenges brought to me will have their standings posted here as well. If you want to play Typeracer or any other typing game, you can find me under the account EggyPlaysIt. Tag me in the discord at any time, or P.M. me here on the forum.
Hope to type with y'all soon!
Dream: Become fast enough at typing to catch thoughts before they disappear.
Vision: National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) diploma requires a 100wpm shorthand test for a passing grade. Pitman shorthand was the bane of my existence in school, and looks like a DnD language, so we'll do it in longhand.
Goals:
January: 45 wpm/ 85% accuracy, 35% consistency
February: 72 wpm/ 90% accuracy, 45% consistency
March: 90 wpm/ 97% accuracy, 50% consistency
Use:
- Cooler Master C550 full size keyboard
- Gateron Blue clicky mechanical switches
- QWERTY standard US layout
- Homerow Basic style
- Typing.com (course)
- 10fastfinegers.com (practice)
- Monkeytype.com( testing)
- Typeracer.com
Days 1-2
Day 3
- The past few days have been spent practicing motions to get around the alphabet, and today I have picked up the last few letters, Z, Q, P, and Enter. My fingers are noticably more confident than yesterday, however i feel I am a long way off until the shakiness in my hands go away for good. I need to work on retracting my fingers to the home row more, as I keep drifting my right hand to the wrong position. On the bright side though, I did increase consistency. I keep stealing the occasional glance at the keyboard, but it's getting better. Tomorrow, I start the intermediate course at typing.com
Day 4-5
- The past couple days have been really distracting and stressful for me, and it definetly showed up in my typing. throughout the entirety of both days of practice, my hands were unsteady and my focus was hazy. On day 4, I did my the first foray into the intermediate section on typing.com just to keep up the habit, with no typing test done. Today was more structured, but still really hazy. I might consider a short meditation before practice.
